2014 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Selections
Skillman, N.J. ----- San José State University's doubles team of Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey received recognition from the International Tennis Association (ITA) Monday. The pair checked in at No. 46 in the preseason rankings and received a qualifying doubles draw to the prestigious 2014 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, held Sept. 27-Oct. 5 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships is one of the premiere collegiate tennis events in the country and features some of the nation's top players. Doubles finalists will earn an automatic berth to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
As a qualifying draw, Klocker and Rey are guaranteed at least two matches in a pool of top-50 opponents, something that head coach Sylvain Malroux sees as an invaluable experience as they begin their sophomore season.
"It's an amazing opportunity because obviously we want to play the toughest schedule possible make them better," Malroux said. "For them, facing the best competition in the country will really push them and give them a lot of experience."
Klocker and Rey turned heads with an impressive showing at the 2013 ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Stanford, Calif., when they reached the semifinals by knocking off a trio of opponents, including Cal's then-11th-ranked team of Lynn Chi and Anett Schutting.
The sophomore duo went 10-6 together a season ago, including a 6-4 mark in dual match play at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. In addition to earning All-Mountain West recognition as a doubles team, each was a 2014 All-Mountain West singles selection and Rey was tabbed the Mountain West's Co-Freshman of the Year.
The draws will be announced at a later date.
