Indianapolis, Ind.----- San Jose State University will make its second NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship appearance when the Spartans take on the University of California, Saturday, May 13. The match at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the Cal campus begins at noon.
The match wil be streamed live on www.calbears.com.
The Spartans (14-7) earned an automatic qualification position as the Mountain West champion after defeating UNLV, 4-0, on April 30. Cal (17-5), ranked 16th nationally in the April 25 Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, finished second at the Pacific-12 Conference Championship after losing to #6-ranked Stanford, 4-1.
"It will be good going up to Cal. We'll have a lot of support -- friends, relatives, staff. We're familiar with Berkeley. We've played there many times in their fall tournament and we're familiar with their players, also," said San Jose State head coach in a Facebook Live interview. "...It will be a good battle."
The first time the Spartans competed in a NCAA Women's Tennis Championship was in 2013. San Jose State lost to UC Irvine, 4-2.
The winner of the San Jose State-Cal match faces the winner of LSU-Tulsa, Sunday, May 14, at noon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. That winner moves on to the 16-team NCAA Championship tournament in Athens, Ga., May 19-23.
Single-day tickets for the any of the matches hosted by the University of California are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for youths, students and seniors. Tickets only are available at the Hellman Tennis Complex located near the intersection of Fulton and Kittredge streets on the west end of the campus.
