BOISE, Idaho -- Bottom seeded San Jose State University advanced to the quarter final round and finished in a tie for fifth place at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference championship on April 28 in Boise , Idaho.

The Spartans played their way into the quarters by beating out eighth seeded Utah State, 4-3 in the tournament's opening match.

Leon Chao lost the first set 6-3 to Jaclyn West but with all other matches finished, won the final two sets and clinched the fourth and winning match-point for the Spartans.

"This was the biggest clutch win of the season for Sabi and our team," said Spartans' head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "I am so proud of the way she played. Everyone on both sides was on the edge of their seats and our girl was able to pull out the win."

Chau Truong and Sandra Florea also won their singles duals for San Jose State.

Truong defeated Kristina Voytsekhovich in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 for her team-leading 20th win in 2011. Meanwhile, Florea didn't allow a point in the second set as she took down Brianna Harris 7-5, 6-0.

"I'm very proud of the way the team played here at the WAC Championship," said Nguyen Church. "We were very competitive all day and it was a great win this morning against Utah State. I'd like to congratulate Sabi for her second team all-WAC selection. She was invaluable to our team this year and very deserving of this award."
