Women's Tennis Ties For 5th In WAC Championship

Honolulu, HI-----The San Jose State women’s tennis team finished its 2009 campaign with a fifth place finish at the WAC Championship for the sixth straight year. After moving forward from an earlier 4-0 win over Louisiana Tech, the Spartans finished with a 4-0 loss to the number one seed, Fresno State.

The Spartans picked up a 4-0 victory against Louisiana Tech in their opening round of the Tournament.  Senior Amber Silverstone defeated Ashley Wedderburn in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, for her 100th career win as a Spartan.  Starting during the 05-06 season, Silverstone accumulated 48 wins in singles play, and 52 victories in doubles.

“Amber played the entire time with 110% focus and energy in this morning’s match,” said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church

“After today’s first match, I was very happy with the way our team came back from the rain delay with great intensity,” said Nguyen-Church.  “I feel like all of our girls came out on the court ready to work hard for every point.”

In the nightcap, San Jose State lost to the tournament’s number one seed, Fresno State, 4-0 to conclude the 2009 season for the Spartans.  San Jose State lost the doubles point and then dropped three singles matches to end the dual.
San Jose State ends the season with a dual-match match record of 13-14.  This is the first 13-win season for women’s tennis since the 99-00 season.

Nguyen-Church concluded, “This year’s schedule was by far the toughest in all my years of coaching here at San Jose State.  Playing against three nationally-ranked teams in your conference creates a great challenge.  Fresno State was the number-one seed in the tournament, and they certainly played like it against us today.”
