SAN JOSE, Calif. -- In the final match of the 2011 dual season San Jose State defeated UC Santa Cruz, 6-1 on April 21 in Santa Cruz, Calif.
The win was the second of the year against Banana Slugs and gave the Spartans a finishing record of 7-12, 0-3 WAC.
Senior Anna Guzman led San Jose State with the most convincing win of the day, 6-1, 6-0 over UCSC's Rachel Shinto.
Sabastiani Leon Chao ended her freshman campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ariana Mokhtari.
Leon Chao finished the 2011 dual season with a 9-8 record and was 9-7 as the Spartans' No. 1 singles player.
Chau Truong won her team-leading 13th singles match as she beat Taylor Mannix 6-4, 6-2. Two wins in the Western Athletic Conference Championship tournament will give Truong two consecutive seasons with at least 30 combined wins.
Sandra Florea and Olivia Marshall were also winners for San Jose State.
Florea beat Sarah Courtland 6-2, 7-5 while Marshall squeaked by Laura Wade in a super tiebreaker 3-6, 6-3 (11-9).
"I'm really happy with the way our team played today and it feels good to end the season with a win," said San Jose State head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "I hope we can keep it up and be tough competitors in the WAC tournament."
The Spartans will head into the WAC championship tournament seeking their first win against a conference foe since the 2008-09 season.
The tournament will be April 28-March 1 in Boise, Idaho.
