Spartans Beat New Mexico State, 4-3, Streak To 11

San Jose Calif. – The San Jose State women’s tennis team extended their record setting winning streak to 11, on Wednesday, April 4, edging conference opponent New Mexico State, 4-3. It was the first time since the 1988 season that the Spartans (12-3) defeated the Aggies (9-6), spanning 12 matches, in 24 years, and two conferences.

In doubles, San Jose State’s No. 1 tandem of Sabastiani Leon Chao/Erica Medlin took down New Mexico State’s Natalia Salum/ Manon Sylvain, 8-4. The win was the 11th straight for the sophomore/freshman combination. Shortly thereafter the freshman duo of Isadora Busch/Jessica Willett defeated Annemieke Witte / Denise Van Der Ben, 8-5, to secure the doubles point. It is the 12th time this year the Spartans have won the doubles point and the 11th consecutive match.

“We competed very well today,” sophomore Leon Chao said. “I always get more excited about a conference match, especially New Mexico State. We are making history and improving in each match.”

A line-up change was announced prior to singles play by head coach Sylvain Malroux. Junior Chau Truong moved to the No. 1 spot while Leon Chao slid down to No.2. Truong fell to Manon Sylvain, 6-3, 6-4, ending her 10-match winning streak. Leon Chao came through with a victory in straight sets over Van Der Ben, 6-2, 6-0.

“It was a slight adjustment for me,” Leon Chao added. “I like to let the other player provide the power, but this was more of a placement type match.”

The Spartans had their second singles match victory from Busch, who handled Witte, 6-2, 6-3. The win was Busch’s fourth in a row and her 10th singles dual match win of the season. New Mexico State rattled off four singles wins, setting up the final match being played between Medlin and Ginet Pinero that would decide the outcome of the match. Medlin controlled the first set, 6-1. The second set was a back and forth battle, with both teams watching and cheering. Medlin delivered a 6-4 victory.

“This team continues to impress me and show a desire to be better,” head coach Malroux said. “We are exceeding expectations and I think still have more to give. Some players who lost today played very well, but they think they could do better, and that is the sign of a great team.”

The Spartans return to action this weekend as they take on Utah State, Saturday, April 7, at 11:00 a.m., and Hawai’i Sunday, April 8, at 9:30 a.m., both times are Hawaiian.
