SAN JOSE, Calif.---Chau Truong went the distance to earn San Jose State's only point in their, 6-1 loss to Fresno State at the Spartan Tennis Complex on April 3.
Truong worked her way to a, 6-3 first set win, against Laura Pola to start the match in the number two singles position. Pola evened the contest to one set a piece after winning, 6-2 in the second, and forced a super tiebreaker.
Spartans' head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church watched Truong let an 8-2 lead slip away in a race to the winning tenth point of the tiebreaker. "I couldn't believe it when I saw the score tied at eight in their match," said Nguyen-Church.
Deadlocked at eight, Truong put away the next two points in San Jose State's favor to win the tiebreaker and the match, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
"I felt pretty amazing when the match was over," said Truong. "Knowing how tough these opponents are from Fresno State, I was very relieved to win my match."
Kerri Kummer for San Jose State, made things interesting against Melissa McQueen, but was unable to win in either of the first two sets losing, 6-4, 6-3.
All other Spartan singles players: Olivia Marshall, Anna Guzman, Sandra Florea, and Jennifer Williams, lost in straight sets.
"The score may not show it, but our team played well today," said Coach Nguyen-Church following the match. "Chau is such a hard fighter, and I'm proud of the way she finished her match today."
San Jose State drops to 10-9, 0-3 WAC, but will have an opportunity tomorrow to get their first conference win against the University of Idaho. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Spartan Tennis Complex on April 4.
