Tennis Sweeps Las Vegas Round Robin

The San Jose State women’s tennis team will return home after sweeping their portion of matches in the Las Vegas Round Robin Tournament, on March 27-28.

The Spartans took on Idaho State on Friday in the first of two matches on the weekend, winning 4-1.  Then on Saturday, San Jose State defeated Southern Utah University for the second time this season, 6-1.

Due to injuries in the Idaho State lineup, the Spartans and the Bengals played a “4-1” match format.  Meaning, there are four singles matchups playing to eight, and one matchup in doubles also to eight.

In singles, Jennifer Williams defeated Stephany Roldin 8-3, and Sanda Hadzisabic defeated Kelli Ogborn, 8-0.

Anna Guzman played point for point with Lisel Lewis before dropping the match 9-7.  Idaho State was unable to produce players in the number four singles position, and in the one and only doubles spot.  Both cases resulted in a “win by default” for San Jose State, making it a 4-1 victory for the Spartans.

Against Southern Utah University, Senior Amber Silverstone found herself down 6-3 after the first set.  Silverstone battled back in the second and third to defeat Ksusha Nazarova, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

“I’m very proud of the way Amber played in today’s match,” said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.  “She never let her opponent’s early lead get to her and she was able to finish strong.”

San Jose State’s Olivia Marshall outlasted Kirrily Burden though two sets and a super tiebreaker to win, 6-1, 5-7, 10-8.

“Olivia fought off her nerves really well during the tiebreaker and she was able to hold on for an important victory,” said Nguyen-Church.

Silvana Dukic also won a super tiebreaker to conclude her match against Martha Kruk, 7-6, 7-5, 10-3.

While, freshman Kerri Kummer lost her matchup against Emmi Nelson-Bulloch, 6-4, 6-3, Jennifer Williams and Anna Guzman both won in straight sets.

In Doubles, the Spartan pairings of Silverstone/Kummer, and Marshall/Guzman each won 8-6, while Dukic/Williams defeated Nelson-Bulloch/Carmen Blanco, 8-4.

San Jose State Moves to 9-8 on the 2009 season, and will return home to play Sonoma State on March 31.
