Women's Tennis Perfect At Las Vegas Round Robin

LAS VEGAS, Nev.---Anna Guzman and Jennifer Williams went for a combined 4-0 singles record in San Jose State's wins over Southern Utah, 4-3, and Dixie State, 6-1. The two wins on March 27, gave the Spartans a perfect, 3-0 record in the 2010 Las Vegas Round Robin Tournament.

San Jose State dropped the doubles decision in the first match of the day against Southern Utah, but were able to get wins from spots three through six in singles play, to secure the 4-3 victory.

Williams commanded her way to a straight set win over Mandie Divino, 6-1, 6-1, as did Guzman in her matchup with Carmen Blanco.

Kerri Kummer never looked back from a 6-1 first set win against Kirrily Burden, and won it, 6-1, 6-4.

Sandra Florea clinched the match for San Jose State when she defeated Kristi Latteier in a super tiebreaker, 6-0, 7-6, 10-6.

"Sandra is suffering some pretty bad blisters right now, and I am so proud of the way she fought through to not split sets, and clinch the match for us," said Spartans' head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.

In the second match, against Dixie State, the Spartans swept the doubles competition, winning all three matches by a score of, 8-2.

In singles, Chau Truong bounced back from an earlier loss and shut out Lydia Hays, 6-0, 6-0 in the number one spot for San Jose State.

Megan Kummer appeared in the lineup for only the second time this dual season, and won in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-1 over Kimberly Hintze.

Olivia Marshall closed out Alicia Holm in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, while Guzman and Williams cruised to their second victories of the day in singles, which set up the 6-1 win for the Spartans.

"I'm proud of our girls for finishing 3-0 in this tournament," Nguyen-Church said. "We'll all enjoy this Sunday off after the three wins that capped off a stretch of five matches in five days."

San Jose State went 4-1 during that five game stretch, improving their record to 10-6 overall in 2010. The team returns to action on Tuesday March 30 at home against Montana at 2:00 p.m.
