LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Chau Truong won every point in both sets against North Dakota's Callie Ronkowski, but in the end the Fighting Sioux defeated the Spartans 5-2 on March 26 at the Las Vegas Challenge Tournament.
"Chau got out to a fast start and she never looked back," said San Jose State head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.
Truong's 6-0, 6-0 sweep was one of only two wins in singles for the Spartans on the day. Anna Guzman also won in straight sets at No. 5 singles against Stephanie Biehn 6-1, 6-4.
San Jose State's No. 1 doubles pairing, Sabastiani Leon Chao and Sandra Florea, were handed their first loss of the season on Saturday. The 8-6 loss to Erin Kappers and Callie Ronkowski moves their record to 7-1 in 2011.
Freshman Emily Prescott came back to win the second set and force a tiebreaker against Hallie Welk, but managed only one point in the tiebreak and dropped the match 6-7 (4), 6-1, (10-1).
"Our team started really flat today and we spent the rest of the match playing catch up," said Nguyen-Church. "You can't win matches playing like that. We are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow and playing hard from the start."
The Spartans continue play at the Las Vegas Challenge tomorrow with a doubleheader. They face Seattle University at 9:00 a.m. and Southern Utah University at 1:00 p.m.
