LAS VEGAS, Nev.---The San Jose State women's tennis team opened up with a 5-2 win over Idaho State in their first of three matches in the Las Vegas Round Robin Tournament on March 26.
The Spartans started out by taking two out of three in doubles competition, earning them the initial point in the match. Kerri Kummer and Sandra Florea teamed up to defeat Lisel Lewis and Risa Fujiwara, 8-2 in number-one doubles.
Jennifer Williams and Olivia Marshall won in number-three doubles, 8-6 against Rachel Ryan and Amy Bettis, to secure the point for San Jose State.
In singles, Olivia Marshall showed resilience by battling back after dropping the first set, to win her match, 4-6, 6-4 (10-5) over Sophie Dang.
Chau Truong took care of business for the Spartans in the number-one spot, beating Lisel Lewis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Sandra Florea got by Madison Snevily in the first set, 6-4, and never looked back as she also took the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Finally, Jennifer Williams in the number-six position, beat Therese Karlsson, 6-3, 6-2 to complete the 5-2 victory for San Jose State.
"Despite a really tough, windy day, our players did a great job of keeping focus and balance throughout the match," said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.
San Jose State continues in the tournament tomorrow at 11:00 am against Southern Utah, and finishes the day with a match at 3:00 p.m. against Dixie State.
