Women's Tennis Falls To UC Riverside, 6-1

SAN JOSE, Calif.---San Jose State (7-6) fell, 6-1 to UC Riverside (4-7) on March 25, in a match that had five tiebreakers, and lasted over four hours long.

The first tiebreaker came in doubles where Kerri Kummer and Sandra Florea were able to hold off a late run by Angelique Corpuz and Roxanne Plata on the number-one court, 8-7 (6).

In singles, Jennifer Williams commanded the first set against Plata, 6-2 in the sixth position for San Jose State. Plata made the second set much more interesting as she kept with Williams during every game point. Williams however, kept the edge throughout the set and tiebreaker, defeating Plata, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Chau Truong started in the number one position in Spartans' head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church's lineup for the second straight match. Truong pulled out a 6-4 first set win, but lost the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3) to Nadia Sakhakorn.

That ultimately forced a super-tiebreaker in which Sakhakorn prevailed, 10-3. "I started to get frustrated with myself out there," said Truong following the match. "I may have started thinking a bit to much, but those kind of matches are going to happen."

Kummer, and Olivia Marshall were both pushed into first set tiebreakers, and both came up short. Kummer was beat by Taylor Raney, 7-6 (4), 6-3, and Marshall lost to Donna McCullough, 7-6 (6), 6-1. Anna Guzman, and Sandra Florea for San Jose State, both lost their singles matches in straight sets.

"These teams were very evenly matched today," said Nguyen-Church. "It's unfortunate, but they were better at closing out the points than we were. Jen did a great job fighting to win her match, and Chau gave it her best in what was an incredible match."

San Jose State hits the courts again tomorrow in the first day of the Las Vegas Round Robin Tournament where they will face Idaho State beginning at 11:00 a.m.
