Tennis Breaks Record In 7-0 Win

Las Vegas Nev. – The San Jose State women’s tennis team made program history Saturday, March 24, beating the University of North Dakota, 7-0. The win was the Spartans’ eighth straight, which surpassed the previous record of seven, held by the 1986 team.

San Jose State (9-3) handled the Fighting Sioux (2-14) in the doubles portion, winning each game. Erica Medlin/Sabastiani Leon Chao boosted their winning streak to eight as a pair, knocking out Stephanie Petsis/ Stephanie Biehn, 8-4. Chau Truong/Alexis Marquez got an 8-1 win over Megan Sween/Mindy Lawrence. Truong/Marquez have won their last four doubles matches. In the final doubles match, Jessica Willett/Isadora Busch beat Sarah Stejskal/ Lindsey Viegut in the closest contest of doubles play, 8-5. The Spartans have won the double point every time during their eight match win streak.

“Win number eight is fantastic, it shows how hard these players are working,” head coach Sylvain Malroux said. “To have this many young players and break a record from the 80’s is amazing.”

In the singles play, the Spartans had straight set victories in each match to complete the sweep. In the No.2 spot, Truong won her eighth consecutive match, 6-0, 6-4, over Biehn. Sophomore Emily Prescott played in her first dual match of the year, in the No. 6 position, defeating Viegut, 6-2, 6-0. Medlin won her freshman-team-leading seventh singles dual match of the season, against Stejskal, 6-3, 6-3.

“It is a great accomplishment to be a part of,” Medlin, the first year player said. “I am really excited to see how much further we can take it.”

San Jose State looks to extend their record winning streak to nine, Sunday, March 25, when they take on Idaho State University. That match begins at 10:00 a.m. from the Bally’s tennis complex.
