Tennis Ties Program Record Seven Straight Wins

Las Vegas Nev.—For the first time since the 1986 season, the San Jose State women’s tennis team has won seven straight matches, edging Drake (14-4), 4-3, on Friday, March 23.

The Spartans (8-3), started off the day strong in their doubles play earning the key first point of the match. Sabastiani Leon Chao/Erica Medlin continued to play well, winning their seventh consecutive double match together, taking out Manca Krizman/Gabriela Demos, 8-4, in the No. 1 position. It was only the third time this season that the Drake tandem lost a doubles match. Alexis Marquez/Chau Truong got the second doubles win for the Spartans to secure the point, beating Klavdija Rebol/Jessica Aguilera, 8-6.

“I am very proud of this team,” head coach Sylvain Malroux said with excitement following the win. “They are a very good team, it was close but we found a way to win and that is what a great team does.”

In the singles part of the match Truong took a straight set victory in the No. 2 spot over Demos, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Jessica Willett was also a straight set victor, 7-6 (6), 6-3, against Jessica Aguilera. The third singles point came in a battle between Marquez and Ali Patterson. After winning the first set tie break, 7-6 (5), Marquez dropped the second set, 4-6, only to come back with authority sweeping the final set, 6-0, and guaranteeing the 4-3 San Jose State win.

“This is wonderful for a young team to set a new chapter in Spartans history,” Malroux said when commenting on tying the program record seven straight wins.

San Jose State will seek to break the all time record tomorrow, Saturday, March 24, as they take on the University of North Dakota. That match begins at 10:00 a.m. from the Bally’s tennis complex.
