Tennis Drops Match to Toledo 6-1

On Saturday,March 14 in the teams third and final match in Palm Springs, the Spartans women’s tennis team fell to the University of Toledo, 6-1.

“We fought through tough conditions today, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get our team a win,” said tennis head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.

In singles, the only victory of the day came from freshman Kerri Kummer, as she defeated Jessica Azoulay, 6-2 6-3.

“I’m very proud of the way Kerri played throughout the entire match,” said Nguyen-Church.  “She did a good job of battling back from sickness in the past few days, and put herself in position to win.”

In other singles action, after losing the first set, 2-6, senior Amber Silverstone came back to win the second, 6-3 forcing a match-deciding third set.  Silverstone fought hard but ultimately lost to her opponent, Ashley Frey, 2-6 6-3 6-1.  The rest of the Spartans singles, Olivia Marshall, Silvana Dukic, Anna Guzman, and Jennifer Williams, lost in straight sets.

In doubles, the San Jose State pairing of Anna Guzman and Kerri Kummer prevailed against Jessica Azoulay and Melissa Reynolds, 8-3.

“Anna and Kerri’s doubles play was great today,” said Nguyen-Church.  “The way the two of them work and communicate together always makes them a hard duo to beat.”
