BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Chau Truong's third-set victory helped push San Jose State (4-3) past Cal State Bakersfield (2-9), 4-3 on March 12 at the Roadrunner Tennis Courts.
Truong dropped the first set 6-2 to Bakersfield's Estefania Limpias, but rebounded in the second to split the match and force a third set. Then with all other matches completed, Truong defeated Limpias in the third set and match 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. It was the fourth and winning team point for the Spartans in the contest.
"Limpias is a very talented player and it took Chau a while to figure out how to defend the spin shots," said Spartans head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "I couldn't be happier with the way Chau stayed tough and focused enough to come back and win."
Sabastiani Leon Chao defeated Ashlee Thorneycroft 7-5, 6-3, while Anna Guzman and Sandra Florea also won their matches in straight-sets for San Jose State.
"Bakersfield is a much improved team this year, and I'm proud of our team for pulling out a close win on the road," said Nguyen-Church after the match.
The Spartans return home for their next match on March 15 against Northern Colorado University. The match will be the first of a four-match home stand for the Spartans.
