The San Jose State women’s tennis team (4-3) returns home for two matches against the University of Pacific Tigers (4-7), on Saturday, March 9, and the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (1-2) on Sunday, March 10.
San Jose State record: 4-3, 1-0 WAC. The Spartans are on a three match winning streak after beating conference opponent Louisiana Tech, 6-1. San Jose State is 1-2 this season at home.
University of Pacific record: 4-3, 1-3 Big West. The Tigers are on their second, three match losing skid of the season. This match will be their fourth consecutive on the road. Their last win was against Cal State Stanislaus on February 18. Junior Julia Henson was the Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for matches ending on Sunday, February 26. Since then she has one singles win in a loss against USF, 4-3.
University of Southern Utah record: The Thunderbirds are 1-2, before their March 9 and March 10 matches against Dominican and Sonoma State, respectively. The Thunderbirds come into this week’s play with one win against Dixie on their season opener. They have yet to play a home match this season.
Winning Streaks: The Spartans are on a current three match winning streak, a feat they haven’t accomplished since 2009-2010 season, when they did it twice. Their last four match run was in 2008. Freshman Isadora Busch is on a streak of her own, winning four consecutive singles dual matches. The pairing of Sabastiani Leon Chao and Erica Medlin won their last three doubles dual matches.
Freshman Leaders: Medlin and Busch lead the Spartans with five singles dual match victories this year. Medlin contributed four doubles victories, and Busch three. Sophomore Leon Chao also comes into the weekend with five singles wins, playing out of the No. 1 position.
Change It Up: San Jose State’s first-year head coach Sylvain Malroux changed his doubles pairings three times in the first four matches. Sandra Florea/Jessica Willett and Medlin/Sabastiani Leon Chao are the Spartan duos to tally more than one win in dual doubles play.
Doubles Wins: San Jose State is a perfect 4-0 this season when taking the dual doubles point in a match.
Play begins this Saturday, March 10, at 1:00 p.m. against University of Pacific. Sunday’s match will start at 11:00 a.m., both matches will be played at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
