Marie Klocker Named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player Of The Week

March 8, 2017

For the second week in a row, a San Jose State University player was named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week.

Senior Marie Klocker from Mulhouse, France, is the conference Player of the Week for going undefeated in four singles and doubles contests on March 3 and 4 against Saint Mary's and Portland in a pair of non-conference dual matches.

Klocker and her partner, Sybille Gauvain, extended their doubles winning streak to six while playing in the #1-position.

Klocker also posted straight-set singles victories at #2 over Portland's Jelena Lazarevic, 6-1, 6-4, and Saint Mary's Jacqueline Pelletier, 6-3, 6-3.

"She's battled back from a pretty bad shoulder injury at the end of last fall. It's taken her about seven matches to finally feel her groove. She is a really strong player who has played #1 or #2 (singles) since she arrived here at San Jose State. We're happy she won this award," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka. "I think right now her ability to attack the ball and get up to the net (are her strong points). Marie has great hands at the net and a very good volley. A lot of the top players don't see that. Usually, they're just strong baseliners, but she has a strong baseline game and can get up to the net and use her athletic ability to create some shots we don't see that often."

For the season, Klocker is 9-6 in singles and 12-5 in doubles. With her singles win over Lazarevic, she moved into a second-place tie with Julianna Bacelar for career singles and doubles victories at San Jose State with 131. The six-time All-Mountain player in her first three seasons needs two wins to pass Sebastiani Leon Chao to become the school's all-time leader in career victories with 133.

Her first opportunity to become the new career leader is Sunday, March 12, when San Jose State travels to Santa Clara for a dual match beginning at noon.

Klocker joins doubles partner Sybille Gauvain as a Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week this year. Gauvain, ranked #72 nationally in singles, was the Player of the Week for matches ending the week of February 26.
