SAN JOSE, Calif.---San Jose State women's tennis swept the doubles competition and won four of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over Southern Utah University at the Spartan Tennis Complex on March 7.
Chau Truong, Anna Guzman, Sandra Florea, and Jennifer Williams filled spots three through six respectively for the Spartans, and each won their match in straight sets.
"All of the players on our team are equally talented, and that gives us very strong depth throughout the whole lineup," said San Jose State head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.
Truong dropped only two games in the first set against Kirrily Burden, and then was perfect in the second, winning, 6-2, 6-0. Florea nearly mirrored Truong's score as she defeated Kristi Latteier, 6-2, 6-1.
"I served the ball much better today than I have in the past," said Florea. "I had no double faults today, and I just made sure to get the ball back and stay in until the end."
Anna Guzman cruised through her second set after tangling with Carmen Blanco in a first set tiebreaker. Guzman won that tiebreaker and the match, 7-6 (2), 6-1.
Olivia Marshall and Kerri Kummer, who filled the first and second spots in the Spartan singles lineup, both lost their matches in straight sets. Marshall battled in each set against Ksusha Nazarova but lost, 6-4, 6-4, and Kummer's loss against Olga Tatarchenko went final as, 6-3, 6-3.
The win moved San Jose State to 5-1 on the season; the best record through six matches the tennis program has ever had. Next, they'll face UC Davis on the road on March 11, in a match that was rescheduled from earlier in the year due to rain.
