Women's Tennis Slips Past Southern Utah 4-3

San Jose State women’s tennis won, 4-3, in its match-up with Southern Utah University (3-2) on March 8.  Olivia Marshall of San Jose State beat her opponent Ksusha Nazarova 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the last singles match of the day to seal the Spartans’ victory.

“Today was Olivia’s first time playing in the number one spot, and she handled herself with great maturity,” said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.  “The match could have gone either way, and I’m extremely proud of the way she fought for every last point to help us win.”

Senior Amber Silverstone was one of three other Spartans to win in singles play for the match triumph.  Silverstone shut out her opponent Kirrily Burden in the second set, capping off a 6-3, 6-0 victory.  Two more wins in singles came from straight set defeats by freshman Kerri Kummer 6-4, 6-3, and junior Jennifer Williams 6-2, 6-4.

“This was the toughest Southern Utah team that we’ve played in many years, and I’m very happy with the way our team took care of business,” said Nguyen-Church.

Today’s win capped off a 2-0 weekend at home for the Spartans, and they improve their record to 5-3 on the season.
