Ball Bounces Toward LMU

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sabastiani Leon Chao's third victory in a row at number-one singles kept San Jose State (2-1) alive, but the team was stopped short by Loyola Marymount (3-5), 5-2 on February 26.

The Spartans were unable to secure the match point in doubles as Leon Chao and partner Sandra Florea were the only winners of the three groups. Together they beat Loyola's Ashley Anderson and Maya Jin, 8-5.

In singles, Leon Chao battled April Bisharat through the first set and took it 6-4. The Spartans' top freshman went on to win the second set and the match 6-4, 6-2.

"She was hitting the ball back to me so hard," said Leon Chao. "I had a stronger mental game than she did and that's what allowed me to pull this one out."

Florea faced Anderson again in the singles competition in what was the longest and closest match of the afternoon. After winning the first set 6-4, Florea lost the second 6-2 leading to a super tiebreaker. The two went point-for-point until Florea pulled out the win by two, 12-10.

"That was a really intense and close match for me," said Florea. "Somebody had to win it out there. I did my best to just get the ball back and then capitalize when ever I could."

Sophomore Chau Truong also forced a super tiebreaker by coming from behind to win the second set against Melissa Valenzuela. Truong however, came out on the losing side of the match, 5-7, 6-2, (10-4).

Olivia Marshall, Emily Prescott and Anna Guzman all lost in straight sets for San Jose state.

"I was a little disappointed about how the team started out in doubles today," said Spartans head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "We lost an important point there, but Loyola Marymount is a very talented team. We had some good shots out there, and even though we lost, we'll be a better team and ready to take on our area rival Santa Clara next week."

San Jose State's next match across town at Santa Clara University is set for March 2 at 2:00 p.m.
