Women's Tennis Downed By UC Davis

The San Jose State women’s tennis team dropped to (3-2) after being brought down 7-0 by UC Davis (6-7) on February 24.  In singles, freshman Kerri Kummer stretched her opponent Jenna Kappel to a super tiebreak set where Kummer would go on to lose 6-1, 3-6, (11-9).

“Kerri has been battling sickness for the past few days, and she showed toughness by being able to stay in the match until the last point.”  Said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.

Olivia Marshall of San Jose State had a comeback effort in the second set of her singles match, but fell short to her opponent Herzyl Legaspi 6-3, 7-5.  Coach Anh-Dao says,

“Olivia played a very smart opponent today, and she proved that she is a tough player physically and mentally.”

The rest of the Spartan singles: Amber Silverstone, Silvana Dukic, Anna Guzman, and Jennifer Williams all lost in straight sets.

In doubles, the San Jose State pairing of Silvana Dukic and Jennifer Williams went point for point with Desiree Stone and Sidney Brady before losing the last two for a final score of 8-6.

Despite the final score showing 7-0, the Spartans had many close set scores in singles.  After posting five 6-3 set losses to go along with a 6-4 and 7-5 loss, coach Anh-Dao said, “We had a team pep talk, it worked for our attitude as a team.  I told them that they have the ability to step forward against their opponents and that it is in their hands to go out and win.  Our talk really helped the way our team carried themselves today.”
