ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Anna Guzman's near shutout led San Jose State (2-0) past Sonoma State (2-3), 6-1 on February 20 in Rohnert Park, Calif.
Guzman allowed only one point to Sonoma's Katya Welborn in route to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Freshman Sabastiani Leon Chao led the charge from the number-one singles position in the second straight match for the Spartans. Leon Chao won a second-set tiebreaker to seal the win against Dana Carollo 6-2, 7-6(5).
"We've been working on eliminating unforced errors at practice, and the team really cut their mistakes down today," said Spartans' head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "I'm proud of the way we finished strong in singles matches."
Along with Guzman, Chau Truong, Olivia Marshall and Sandra Florea all beat their opponents in straight-sets. None of those players for San Jose State allowed more than one point to the opposition in the second set.
San Jose State also won all three matches in the doubles competition. That's something the Spartans did only four times all of last season.
"We put a lot of good things together and got a solid win as a team," said Nguyen-Church. "We want to continue working hard and come out strong for the next home stand."
The Spartans next match against CSU Bakersfield will be the first of a five match home stand. The match is set for February 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
