Williams Prevails as Women's Tennis Falls to Santa Clara

Santa Cara, Calif.----In San Jose State’s 6-1 loss against Santa Clara on February 19, Spartan Jennifer Williams came up with a comeback win in her singles match against opponent Courtney Hull.

Williams dropped the first set, 6-0 and then battled her way through the second winning 7-6 (3) and pushing the match to a super-tiebreaker.  In the tiebreak set, Williams pushed on and prevailed in the match, 0-6 7-6(3) (10-5).

“Jennifer is not a player who will sit back and wait for her opponent to make a mistake.  Today she played hard and smart in a really great comeback on her part,” said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church

Senior Amber Silverstone also played in a tough match on the number one singles court, falling to Santa Clara’s Stephanie Galainena, 7-5 6-3.

“It’s always tough to play at Santa Clara, and I think that their home court advantage was a big factor in Amber’s loss today.” said Nguyen-Church.

The rest of the Spartan lineup: Kerri Kummer, Silvana Dukic, Anna Guzman, and Olivia Marshall lost their singles matches in straight sets.  All three doubles matchups were won by Santa Clara.

Following the loss, the San Jose State women’s tennis team will travel to Sonoma State for a dual match on February 20.  The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday February 17, but was postponed due to weather.
