Women's Tennis Wins Nail Biter, 4-3

San Jose, Calif.--- The San Jose State women's tennis team defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 4-3, on Sunday, February 7, at the Spartan Tennis Complex. There were many deciding factors throughout the match, but it all came down to Jennifer Williams' third set tie-breaker win in the number six singles position for the Spartans.

Williams and her opponent, Lexy Harrington, were deadlocked at 2-2 in the final set tie-breaker before Williams took five of the last six points to win it, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).

"I stayed confident throughout the entire match, and I knew I was going to win," said Williams following the dual.

While Williams went through three tie-break sets, Chau Truong sat and watched her teammate for over an hour after she shutout Erin McGurty in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Anna Guzman was also a straight set winner for San Jose State, defeating Heather Cotter, 6-2, 6-4.

For the second match in a row, the Spartans earned a valuable match point in doubles competition.

Guzman and Williams were nearly shut out by Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng, 8-1 on the number one doubles court. Kerri Kummer and Sandra Florea for San Jose State, defeated Vanesa Reibstein and Bri
McClintock, 8-4. That left the doubles point up to Olivia Marshall and Chau Truong for San Jose State, who defeated Heather Cotter and Erin McGurty in yet another tie-breaker, 9-8 (3).

"We knew Stanislaus was going to give us a competitive match, and the entire team had to play well for us to get a win." said Spartan's head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church. "Jen is one of those players that the team can always count on in tough situations, and she proved that to us again today. Chau Truong also showed that she has intensity and a high energy level which are great values to this team."

San Jose State improves to 2-0 on the season and will resume action again on the road at Sonoma State on February 18.
