Women's Tennis Gets Second Win Against UC Santa Cruz

The San Jose State women’s tennis team moved to 2-0 on the season, after defeating the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs Wednesday at the San Jose State Tennis Complex.  For the second dual match in a row, all Spartan singles won in straight sets which capped off the teams second 7-0 victory.

In the opening doubles match, the San Jose State pairing of Olivia Marshall and Jennifer Williams beat Chrissy Nichol, and Chloe McHugh 8-1.  Silvana Dukic and Amber Silverstone battled through their match, where they ended up on top after a tie break finish, 9-8 (7-3).

“They played in a tough match today. I went out there and told them to play their game and to put the ball away, and that’s what they did to win,” said head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church about their performance.

Later in singles, Amber Silverstone Played a close first set against Taylor Mannix, but surged through the second to make it a final score of 6-4, 6-1.  Anna Guzman set a quick pace in her match, winning 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Kerri Kummer defeated her opponent Chloe McHugh 6-1, 6-1.

Coach Anh-Dao said after the match, “I felt that Anna and Kerri were very up beat, and played offensively instead of waiting for their opponents to make mistakes.”

San Jose State women’s tennis will take their 2-0 record on the road to play the Sonoma State Seawolves (1-0) on February 17.
