Spartans Fall To #68-UC Irvine, 4-3

Irvine, Calif. ---San Jose State University sophomores Julianna Bacelar and Jessica Willett each contributed a singles win and teamed up to win in the doubles play, but the Spartans fell 4-3 in a close dual match against  #68-UC Irvine in a non-conference women's tennis match.

"We lost a really close match and we had plenty of chances," said head coach Sylvain Malroux. "We did a great job in doubles, but we just need to have more of an effort in order to win against a solid ranked team."

The Spartans (0-1) doubles team of Klaudia Boczova and Erica Medlin defeated UC Irvine's Sarah Gong and Kristina Smith, 8-3. Bacelar and Willett won their match 8-5 against the UC Irvine duo of Ali Facey and Brooke Schweyer to earn the doubles point.

In singles match play, four matches went to three sets. Bacelar faced Facey again and came out with a win in the closest match of the day, defeating Facey in three sets and a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and scored the second point for the Spartans.

Willett contributed her point for San Jose State as she won in three sets, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, against Kat Facey of UC Irvine (1-1).

The Spartans now travel to Fullerton, Calif. on January 22 to face Cal State Fullerton at 2:00 p.m. at the Titan Courts on Cal State Fullerton's campus.
