Stanford, Calif.----- The quarterfinal round was the end of the line for San Jose State University in the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northwest Regional Championships at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the Stanford University campus.
Singles player Sybille Gauvain, a semifinalist in singles in this tournament a year ago, ran into a hot Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford who won her fourth straight set match in three days, 6-2, 6-3. Gauvain was seeded #3 while Arbuthnott was seeded #7.
The Spartan highlight of the day might have been the doubles team of Tamara Culibrk and Laura Malsert topping #5-seed Georgia Lawson and Emma Wilson of Fresno State, 8-5, in the third round. Culibrk and Malsert later dropped an 8-4 decision to the #1-seeded doubles pair Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic of Cal, 8-4.
"Overall, I'm really proud of this team finishing its last day at Stanford. Although we came up short in some matches, (assistant coach) Julianna (Bacelar) and I saw a lot of upside in both singles and doubles," said Spartans head coach Chad Skorupka. San Jose State about his seven players compiling an 18-13 record in all matches played.
San Jose State concludes the fall tournament season at the Bronco Invitational, November 3-5, at Santa Clara University.
