STANFORD, Calif. - San José State University's doubles teams headlined the Spartans second day of action at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
Both doubles tandems, Julianna Bacelar and Malin Cubukcu and Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey, won their round of 32 matches to advance to Sunday's round of 16. Bacelar and Cubukcu topped Catherine Leduc and Jamie N. Pawid of Saint Mary's, 8-2, while Klocker and Rey breezed past Sacramento State's duo of Olivia Boija and Daria Savchenko by an 8-1 margin.
In the championship bracket of singles action, Cubukcu dropped her first match of the young season, falling 6-1, 6-2, to the Gaels' Danielle Flores.
In the consolation bracket, Klocker stayed alive by downing Washington's Miki Kobayashi, 6-2, 7-5, and Bacelar fell to Fresno State's Aishwarya Agrawal in a tightly-contested 6-3, 1-6, 1-0(7) match.
On Sunday, Bacelar and Cubukcu will tangle with Stanford's Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay, the 40th-ranked duo in the nation and the tournament's No. 4 seed, at 10 a.m. Also at 10 a.m., Klocker and Rey, the No. 46 doubles team in the country and No. 5 seed in the tournament, will take on Fresno State's Tanya Murtaugh and Rana Sherif Ahmed.
