BERKELEY, Calif. – Miyo Kobayashi, the lone freshman on San José State’s women’s tennis team, finished off an undefeated weekend at the Cal Nike Fall Invitational on Sunday.
Kobayashi, who captured the “White” flight doubles crown with partner Justine Deleval a day earlier, cruised through the singles portion with straight-set wins over UC Davis’ Isabella von Ebbe and Sac State’s Sofia Wicker. The Bangkok, Thailand, native did not lose a single set all weekend en route to a 7-0 overall record in her first action as a Spartan.
"Miyo really stepped it up in both singles and doubles and the team is very proud of her,” head coach Chad Skorupka said. “She didn't look like a freshman player and really played consistently all weekend."
In other actions, Marine Dans and Sybille Gauvain squared off with Cal’s Lyann Hoang and Olivia Hauger in a finals matchup of the top two seeds in the “Gold” doubles bracket and dropped an 8-7 decision.
Sophomore transfer Francesca Sella’s Spartan debut was a winner, as the Carpenedolo, Italy, native topped Cal Poly’s Sayaka Tsugai, 6-1, 6-2, in round robin play.
San José State faces a short week of practice before returning to the courts to take part in the Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational, held Oct. 16-18 on SMC’s Moraga, Calif., campus.
