Cal State Fullerton Edges San Jose State Women's Tennis, 4-3

April 19, 2017

San Jose, Calif.----- For the second time in four days, San Jose State University was defeated, 4-3, in a women's tennis contest. Cal State Fullerton (18-2) was the winner and set a single-season school record for team victories.

The outcome hinged on the third set of the number-one singles match between San Jose State's Marie Klocker and Fullerton's Alexis Valenzuela. Klocker had won the first set handily, but Valenzuela battled back to take the next two sets for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision and the win for the Titans.

Despite Cal State Fullerton taking a 1-0 lead by sweeping the first two doubles matches, the Spartans went ahead, 3-1, on straight-set singles wins by Marine Dans, Tamara Culibrk and Clara Mantaux who was playing just her second singles match of the season. Mantaux was in the lineup at #6-singles.

The Spartans needed one more win to clinch the match, but neither Miyo Kobayashi, Gaelle Rey and Klocker were able to emerge victorious. All three moved up one spot in the lineup with #1-singles player Sybille Gauvain out of action. Playing #4-singles for the first time this season, Kobayashi's eight-match winning streak in singles ended with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Sarah Nuno. Rey was edged by Masako Makiba, 7-5, 7-6.

San Jose State concludes the regular season Saturday, April 22, hosting San Diego State in a Mountain West match at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club. Prior to first serve at noon, the Spartans will honor seniors Dans, Klocker and Rey in their final home match. Klocker and Rey are concluding their Spartan careers ranked 1-2 in total singles and doubles victories. Presently, Klocker has 137; Rey, 135.
