Santa Barbara, Calif.----- Miyo Kobayashi won matches in singles and doubles for San Jose State University, but UC Santa Barbara edged the Spartans, 4-3, in a non-conference women's tennis match.
Playing a dual match for the first time since January 24, San Jose State (1-2) tied the match at 3-3 after Kobayashi topped UC Santa Barbara's Amanda Atanasson, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2.
The dual match came down to each team's best player - #96-ranked Sybille Gauvain for San Jose State and #80-ranked Palina Dubavets for UCSB (1-4). After splitting the first two sets, Dubavets won the deciding third set for a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win at #1-singles.
San Jose State's Marine Dans extended her early-season singles dual-match winning streak to three with a 7-6, 6-4 straight set win over Jaimee Gilbertson.
"We had a good start with our doubles, but UCSB won the majority of `deuce' games (in singles)," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka. "We just need to be a little sharper on the `deuce' games."
San Jose State concludes its weekend road trip with a non-conference match at Cal Poly, Sunday, February 12, at 1:00 p.m.
