Miami, Fla.----- Marine Dans was San Jose State University’s only winner capturing a three-set singles victory in the Spartans’ 6-1 loss to FIU (Florida International University) in a non-conference women’s tennis match.
Dans completed the season-opening road trip 2-0 by defeating Nina Nagoda, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, in the #4-singles match. She was the only San Jose State player to win a set against the Panthers.
“It was a very disappointing day. FIU showed this team why they are ranked in the top-50 (nationally),” said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka.
“We got off to another slow start in doubles and we weren’t able to get any momentum in singles play.”
The Spartans managed to win just one point in the first two doubles matches before FIU gained the team point with the doubles wins.
In a match of two nationally-ranked singles players, #54-ranked Andrea Lazaro of FIU defeated #96-ranked Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State, 6-4, 6-4.
San Jose State returns to action, Saturday, February 3, at Santa Clara, in a non-conference match beginning at 2:00 p.m.
“ We’re looking forward to practicing next week for our upcoming match vs. Santa Clara,” concluded the Spartans head coach.
