Spartans Finish Strong On Final Day Of Arena Invite

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Arena Invitational closed Saturday with a bang for the San Jose State women’s swimming team as two more school records fell, four more NCAA qualifying marks were swam and the Spartans collected seven top-10 finishes on the day.
“It was our best day of the meet,” said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins.
Marisa DeWames got things going for the Spartans with a school-record swim in the 100 freestyle. Her time of 49.41 in the preliminaries broke her own previous record of 49.64 and gave her an NCAA “B” standard time in the event.
Kirsten Trammell capped an outstanding meet with a school-record and NCAA “B” standard time of 2:12.88 in the preliminaries of the 200 breaststroke. The time broke teammate Darcie Anderson’s school record of 2:16.06 by nearly four seconds. Trammell finished second overall in the finals, swimming 2:13.07 to top 62 other competitors.
Anderson also swam in the 200 breaststroke finals and beat her old school record, turning in a time of 2:14.00 after swimming 2:13.07 in the preliminaries. Anderson finished fifth overall in the event and tallied an NCAA “B” standard with her performance.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Meghan McCurley, Kiley Foster, Erika Harvey and DeWames capped the entire meet for the Spartans with a third-place finish, an NCAA “B” standard and school record time of 3:20.23. The mark was two seconds faster than the former school record and four seconds under the NCAA “B” standard of 3:24.67.
All of the Spartans’ top performances across the three-day invitational allowed them to finish fourth among the elite group of 17 programs competing. San Jose State finished with 707 points, trailing Pac-12 Conference schools California (989 points), Arizona State (865.5) and Stanford (812). The Spartans were better than other Pac-12 Conference teams UCLA and Oregon State, and beat defending Mountain West Conference champion San Diego State. The also topped fellow WAC members Hawaii and Fresno State.
“We’re thrilled with how we finished in the team standings,” said Hopkins. “San Diego State crept ahead of us, but the team rallied really well.”
The Spartans take a seven-week break from competition before getting back into the pool on Jan. 6 against CSU Bakersfield. The team’s next home meet is Jan. 13 against Cal State East Bay at the Aquatics Center.
