Swimmers Second On Day One Of 2008 Nike Cup

Long Beach, Calif. - The San Jose State University women’s swim team broke a pair of school records and is in second-place at the conclusion of day one of the 2008 UC Irvine/Nike Cup at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool on Thursday, November 20.

San Jose State has 263 points through the first five events. BYU leads with 351.5 points among 19 scoring teams. Two-time defending Western Athletic Conference champion Nevada is third behind the Spartans with 230, with NCAA Division II power UC San Diego fourth with 226.

The Spartan A’ 400 medley relay of freshman Heather Denman (backstroke) and sophomores Caitlin Macky (breast), Rudie Guerrero (fly) and Meghan McCurley (free), went 3:48.80 to best the previous mark of 3:49.72 by almost a full second. The foursome placed second, behind only Nevada’s 3:47.19. Denman’s lead leg of 54.84, improved on her own school mark in the 100 back of 55.72, also a relay split, set at the WAC Shootout in Las Cruces, N.M., on October 11.

McCurley, a sprint freestyle specialist out of Fair Oaks, Calif., was the joint top individual Spartan finisher on the first day, placing third in the 50 freestyle by sprinting 23.56. Her lifetime-best prelim mark of 23.52 in a breakout performance, is the fastest thus far in the WAC, and puts McCurley in the program’s top-10 list for the first time in her career, all the way up at third.

McCurley also led off the A’ 200 freestyle relay, which timed 1:35.43 for fourth-place, with a 50-yard split of 23.62. The quartet, the third-fastest all-time at SJSU, included Daphne Yeung, Erin Garcia and fourth-year senior Lauren Mar behind her. BYU won the event in 1:33.62.

Amy Friedhoff, a true freshman out of Federal Way, Wash., also turned in a third-place individual performance, swimming 4:56.87 in the 500 free. She went a career-best 4:54.67 during morning prelims, missing a B’ cut by merely .65 seconds, and moving up from seventh to third on the Spartans’ all-time list.

Other top-10 finishes for San Jose State included sophomore Kirsten Trammell with a fourth-place showing in the 200 individual medley (2:05.29), and Mar with a fifth-place effort in the 50 (23.71). Their prelim times were both faster, at 2:04.65 and a season-best 23.63, respectively, with Trammell’s time a lifetime best and jut .06 off the school record. Macky was 11th in the 200 IM in 2:07.28. Her prelim time 2:06.81.

Natasha Menezes of BYU won the 500 free with a B’ cut time of 4:50.95. Rachel Grant of BYU won the 200 IM with a B’ cut of 2:02.65. Margaret Doolittle of Nevada had a B’ cut as well in the 200 IM, with her time of 2:03.26.

The 2008 UCI/Nike Cup continues on Friday, November 21, with seven more events: the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay. The Spartans expect to have a quartet of swimmers compete for top points in the 400 IM, while Denman will compete in the 100 back, the event in which she is currently ranked first in the WAC (55.72). Prelims begin at 11:30 a.m. for the women, with finals at 6:00 p.m.
