More School Records Broken On Day Two Of Arena Invite

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The San Jose State swimming team showed no signs of slowing down Friday after Thursday’s big performance. The Spartans broke two more school records and swam five NCAA “B” standard times while gathering six top-10 finishes on day two of the Arena Invitational at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
Both Kirsten Trammell and Darcie Anderson dipped under the San Jose State school record in the 100 breaststroke while finishing second and third, respectively. Trammell finished the race in 1 minute, 1.44 seconds to retain the record. Anderson swam 1:01.65, besting Trammell’s old mark of 1:02.37 set in 2009. Both times were under the NCAA “B” standard of 1:02.98.
Julia Craddock also broke a record of her own Friday. Her time of 4:19.06 in the 400 individual medley broke her old record of 4:22.73 by more than three seconds and was good for an NCAA “B” standard mark. She finished third in the first consolation for an 11th place finish overall.
Heather Denman rounded out the Spartans’ top-five finishes Friday with a fourth-place showing in the 100 backstroke in 54.36. Her time was under the NCAA “B” standard of 55.17, but was short of breaking her own San Jose State school record of 53.99.
Another strong performance by a Spartans relay team came from the 200 medley relay squad. Denman, Trammell, Ashlyn Acosta and Marissa DeWames carried the team to a third-place finish and an NCAA “B” standard mark, defeating Stanford for the second straight day, with a time of 1:41.30.
“It was another great performance today,” said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins. “I couldn’t be more pleased, more proud of the team. They’re just doing great.”
In all, a total of 12 Spartans swam in their respective events’ finals and consolations. As a team, San Jose State sits in fourth place out of 17 competing women’s squads with 461 points. Pac-12 Conference members Stanford, California and Arizona State occupy the three spots ahead of the Spartans, respectively.
The invitational concludes Saturday with the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay. Preliminaries will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. with finals beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m.
