Swim Team Sixth After Day Two At Nike Cup

Long Beach, Calif. - The San Jose State University women’s swim team sits in sixth place through two days of the 2007 UC Irvine/Nike Cup at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

San Jose State, ranked 22nd in the season’s first installment of the CollegeSwimming.com Division I Mid-Major ranking, has 368 points through the first 12 events. UCLA leads comfortably with 1025.5, followed by BYU (577.5), Pacific (536), Rice (433) and UC Irvine (374) just narrowly ahead of the Spartans among 21 scoring teams.

Lauren Mar was the top Spartan finisher in the 100 back, placing 13th in a season-best 58.39. Seniors Brie Marhenke and Jillene Golez were 14th and 15th, respectively, in the 100 fly. Marhenke timed 58.43 in the evening after the sprint freestyle specialist who also ranks third all-time at San Jose State in the 100 fly, swam 58.28 in her first butterfly race of the season. Golez timed a personal and Spartan season-best 58.26 in morning prelims before providing a 58.55 mark in finals.

Sophomore Hannah Tringham placed 12th in the 400 individual medley in 4:33.26 after swimming 4:31.83 in morning prelims, a season best by almost nine seconds and just under a second and a half slower than her lifetime best, which ranks third all-time at San Jose State. Beste Erener, a junior, followed her in 14th place in 4:35.19 after swimming 4:33.49 in prelims, a season best by over five and a half seconds.

The Spartan 200 medley A’ relay of Mar, freshman Caitlin Macky, Golez and Marhenke raced 1:46.44 to finish third. The season-best time also ranks fifth all-time in San Jose State history. Mar’s opening 100 back split was a season-best 27.03.

The Spartan 800 freestyle A’ relay of freshman Kirsten Trammell, senior Amanda Carr and freshmen Julia Koch and Ashley Krisman produced a ninth-place finish in 7:51.22 in the season’s first 800 free relay for the squad.

Carr was 20th in the 200 free in a season-best 1:55.59. In the 100 breast, Macky and Trammell went 10-11 in 1:06.08 and 1:06.13, respectively, with Macky turning out to be the top individual finisher for the Spartans on the day. Both marks were season bests, ranking them eighth and ninth in school history. Erin Garcia swam 1:11.86 in 100 breast prelims.

Junior Katey Nelson (1:00.27) and freshman Rudie Guerrero (1:01.22) finished 22nd and 27th in the 100 back, both season bests, while Erener (season-best 1:01.27), senior Sara Riley (1:03.49), freshman Jillian Cureton (1:03.74) and team co-captain Nikki Chapman (1:14.23) also competed in prelims of the event.

The 2007 UCI/Nike Cup concludes on Saturday, November 16, with six more events: the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay. Marhenke is currently ranked first in the Western Athletic Conference in the 100 free, and finished fifth in that event at this meet two years ago. Carr (1650 free), Katey Nelson (200 back), Trammell (200 breast), Macky (200 breast), Hannah Tringham (200 fly) and Golez (200 fly) will be top contenders for the Spartans. Prelims begin at 11:30 a.m., with finals at 6:00 p.m.
