Spartans Sweep Past UC Santa Cruz, 174-31

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women’s swimming and diving team had no trouble during their first home meet of the season, defeating the UC Santa Cruz (0-1) Banana Slugs, 174-31, on Saturday afternoon in The Aquatics Center.

"I am very happy with today’s result," said head coach Sage Hopkins, whose team finished first in all 11 events. "We’re finishing up a heavy cycle in training and are fatigued right now, but that's what we expected.

"In terms of where we are in the season, we’re really looking at finishing up our preparation for the Arena Invitational (November 15-17 in Long Beach, Calif.) in the next two weeks.”

Three Spartans (2-1) won multiple races. Michelle Berry, Elana Faria, and Darcie Anderson won two races each.  Berry placed first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.31, improving her season-best by nearly half a second.  She also placed first in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:29.73.

"I thought I did really well," Berry said. "We had a rough first couple of weeks (of training), so our coaches just told us to do our best today and get ready for the Arena (Invitational) in a couple of weeks."

San Jose State won each of the nine individual races as well as both relay events.

“Today was an opportunity to shift some people into events that they do not traditionally swim,” Hopkins said. “We tried to make some final selections, in terms of our lineup going into the Arena Invitational, which will in turn shape our selections for the WAC Championship."

San Jose State will compete again in two weeks when the swimmers travel to Long Beach, Calif., Thursday, November 15 through Saturday, November 17 to compete in the Arena Invitational.  The divers head to the Wildcat Diving Invitational on Friday, November 15 to Sunday, November 18 in Tucson, Ariz.
