With the victory, the Spartans even their dual meet record at 3-3 while improving to 3-1 all-time against the Vandals. Idaho, which had been idle from competition the past three weeks following road losses at Washington State and UCLA, remains winless on the year at 0-3.
Brie Marhenke continued her dominance in the sprint freestyle events, winning both the 50 (23.93) and 100 free (52.26) while improving to a perfect 5-0 on the season in each. She is now 17-0 as a Spartan in the 50 in dual meets and 14-1 in the 100.
Joining Marhenke as two-time individual event winners on Friday were fellow seniors Amanda Carr and Jillene Golez. Carr took both distance freestyle events while Golez swept the butterfly distances, with all four times season bests for the only two three-year letterwinners on the roster.
Marhenke also anchored the first-place 200 free relay to conclude the meet, her split of 23.63 leading a foursome that included freshmen Meghan McCurley and Daphne Yeung, and junior newcomer Joanna Torres before her. It was Torres’ first major college victory as the Spartans timed 1:38.13, a season best by .04 seconds.
Remaining event winners for the Spartans were Lauren Mar in an impressive season-best display in the 100 backstroke (58.49), fellow junior Katey Nelson with her fourth straight dual triumph in the 200 back (2:09.73), Kirsten Trammell in the 200 breast (2:22.95) and fellow freshman Caitlin Macky in the 400 individual medley (4:37.14). Trammell’s time was almost a full second faster than her previous best for the season.
A third freshman, Jo Thibodaux, picked up a couple of uncontested wins on the one-meter and three-meter springboards prior to the start of the swimming, with Idaho not fielding a diving squad. She scored season bests of 235.95 on the one-meter and 235.35 on the three.
After Thibodaux finished her dives, the Spartan 200 medley relay of Mar, Trammell, Tarolyn Robertson and anchor Marhenke timed 1:48.81 to place second to begin the swimming portion of the meet. Carr then went 10:33.58 to win the 1000, almost 10 seconds faster than freshman teammate Ashley Krisman in second and exactly eight seconds faster than her previous season best from the opener at Stanford on October 5. Krisman rallied late to provide an exciting finish to the event, out-touching Idaho’s Mary Skidmore for second by just .04 seconds. Her time of 10:43.14 was over nine seconds faster than her existing collegiate best.
Sophomore transfer Erin Garcia came through with a second-place finish in the 200 free in a lifetime-best 1:56.99, with freshman teammate Julia Koch, who celebrated a birthday the day before, following in third in 1:58.97, just off her best for the year.
After Mar’s win and a two-four finish by Macky (season-best 1:06.26) and Trammell (1:08.05) in the 100 breast, the Spartans dominated the 200 butterfly event, taking the first four spots and scoring the maximum 16 points for the event. Golez led with her 2:08.38, a season best by over a second, followed by sophomores Hannah Tringham (2:08.45) and Ally Jack (2:09.84), and junior Beste Erener (2:10.06). Jack’s time was a season best by over three seconds, and just .13 seconds off her Spartan best.
Marhenke swept the sprint free events around a brief break, with McCurley (24.82) and Yeung (25.16) right behind her in the 50 and Mar (53.13) second in her first 100 free race of the year. Torres (25.23) and freshman Julie Wynn (25.85) had season bests in the 50, with Wynn also lowering her best in the 100 (56.08). McCurley was fourth in the 100 in 54.42.
Behind Nelson’s win in the 200 back, Erener shaved over a second off her season best in third place with a time of 2:11.36, a lifetime-best unshaved mark. Macky followed Trammell in the 200 breast in second place in 2:23.61, a collegiate best by almost two seconds.
Carr took almost three seconds off her season best in taking the 500, with Tringham third (5:15.40) and Koch (5:20.80) also scoring in fifth place. Golez led another Spartan butterfly onslaught in the 100. Jack was stellar again in third in 59.56, a season-best by over a second, with Robertson (1:00.26) and Rudie Guerrero (1:01.12) in fourth and fifth, respectively. Taryn Krische timed 1:05.61 in her first collegiate butterfly race.
In the first 400 individual medley of 2007-08 for the Spartans, Trammell (4:38.11), Erener (4:39.15) and Tringham (4:40.69) ensured a third event with maximum points for SJSU behind Macky’s winning time. Erener’s time was a second lifetime-best unshaved mark on the day for the Turkey native.
Amanda Mikaelsson made her season debut by swimming the 100 free (56.77), the 200 free (2:03.23), and the third leg of the 200 free 'B' relay (25.92 split) that timed 1:43.21. She had not competed as a Spartan since the 2006-07 opener at Stanford. Guerrero, a true freshman, produced a season-best 1:01.80 in placing fourth in the 100 back.
San Jose State next hosts Idaho and Washington State in a double dual meet on Saturday afternoon, October 27, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at The Aquatics Center.
