Marhenke Named WAC Swimming Athlete Of The Week

Denver, Colo. - San Jose State University senior Brie Marhenke has been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week for the week of October 15-21.

Marhenke, who picked up WAC Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in her career just two weeks ago, was a two-time individual and five-time relay winner over a pair of dual meets at conference foe Boise State this past weekend.

The native of Carmichael, Calif., improved to a perfect 16-0 in the 50 freestyle and 13-1 in the 100 free in dual competition as a Spartan during Friday’s loss with a traditional 16-event meet format. She came into the weekend as the top-ranked swimmer in the WAC in each event, and timed 23.57 in winning the 50 by over a second, a season best by .01 seconds and now just .28 seconds off an NCAA B’ cut. She won the 100 by over two full seconds in a time of 52.30.

Marhenke ended Friday’s meet by swimming the third leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.33, just off the Spartan season best. Her split was a 23.43. She also anchored the second-place 200 medley relay (1:49.89) to start the swimming portion of the meet in a blistering 23.08, bettering her previous season-best split of 23.14 from the week before.

On Saturday morning, the senior co-captain was a member of four winning relays during a non-traditional, 11-event diving and relay dual that the Spartans rallied late to win. She swam a total of 325 yards of freestyle on the day, anchoring the first-place 400 medley relay with a split of 52.03 to begin her afternoon. She took the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay (52.92 split) and the 100-yard second leg of the 850 freestyle relay.

With San Jose State facing a must-win situation heading into the 11th and final event of the day, the 100 freestyle relay, down by two points, Marhenke led three freshmen teammates with her 25-yard second leg as the Spartans won in 45.87 by over a full second over the Boise State A’ relay and rallied for the meet victory.

Marhenke ended the week with seven wins, giving her a total of 17 already this season.

The Spartans host a pair of meets this coming weekend at The Aquatics Center on campus. San Jose State will take on conference opponent Idaho at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 26, and both Idaho and Washington State in a double dual meet on Saturday, October 27, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
