Spartans Build Momentum In Day One Of George Haines

STANFORD, Calif. – Strength was found in the breaststroke races for the San Jose State women’s swimming and diving team, as the Spartans took six total top-eight spots in the two breaststroke events held on day one of the George Haines Invitational at Stanford.
The trio of Kirsten Trammell (29.65 seconds), Darcie Anderson (29.69) and Karly Brown (30.93) took first through third place in sweeping the 50 breaststroke. Shannon Slaught finished eighth in 32.38 to also score for the Spartans.
In the 200 breaststroke, Anderson placed third in 2:44.91 and Trammell followed in fifth at 2:47.56.
We had a little bit of a slow start this morning,” said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins. “We kind of built some momentum through this morning’s session, and then really had a tremendous team performance across the board this evening.”
Julia Craddock also figured into the team effort Friday with fifth-place finishes in both the 50 and 100 butterfly events. Meghan McCurley scored in the 50 freestyle with a seventh-place finish and anchored the second place SJSU “A” relay team that posted a time of 43.12.
“All three of our team captains had a great day, and we had strong performances from the divers,” said Hopkins.
Ashlyn Acosta also did well Friday, scoring in both the 50 and 100 butterfly events with a fourth place and seventh place finish, respectively. Acosta was also a member of the 100 medley relay team that finished second in 47.92.
After 12 swimming events and the three-meter diving competition, San Jose State stands in second place with 154 points behind Stanford’s 243. The Spartans lead both Western Athletic Conference teams which are in attendance, Hawaii and Nevada. The Rainbow Wahine have tallied 98 points and the Wolfpack have totaled 23.
Competition resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday and includes a separately scored dual meet for the Spartans against Nevada.
“(It was a) great team performance,” said Hopkins. We hope to extend that momentum and have a great last day of the meet (Saturday).”
