Denver, Colo. - San Jose State University sophomore Jo Thibodaux has retroactively been named the Western Athletic Conference Diver of the Week for the week of September 29-October 5.
Her selection marks the inaugural Diver of the Week award, as the conference had previously combined the top swimming and diving performances into one for a weekly Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week distinction. Thibodaux’s is also the first weekly conference honor for a member of the San Jose State swimming and diving program this season, after Brie Marhenke was a three-time honoree a year ago, and the first of her career for the native of Alvin, Texas.
Thibodaux earned the award for her performance in the Spartans’ season-opening dual meet loss at perennial national powerhouse Stanford on Friday, October 3. She placed third on the one-meter springboard as San Jose State’s top finisher, out of six entrants in all, with a score of 243.98, just 11.02 off an NCAA 'B' cut. Thibodaux later was fifth off the three-meter board with 234.53 points.
Nevada senior Candice Minette won the Diver of the Week distinction for the past week, sweeping all participants on the one-meter and three-meter events on both Friday, October 10, and Saturday, October 11, at the first WAC Shootout in Las Cruces, N.M. Other nominees included Thibodaux, who helped the Spartans to a perfect 5-0 weekend by winning the three-meter event over Air Force and New Mexico State, and Mariesa Cloud of New Mexico State, who posted a pair of runner-up finishes in her Aggie debut, both also at the WAC Shootout.
The Spartans, now 5-1, head into a three-way dual meet in Santa Cruz, Calif., with UC Santa Cruz and Fresno State this Saturday, October 18, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
