Welcome to a new year of Spartan swimming! My name is Katey Nelson, and I am a fourth-year senior. I can’t believe that I will be done competing forever after this season, but couldn’t image ending my career with a better team. The team we have this year is amazing, and we will be successful in and out of the water. Last week, we swam against Stanford, where we had some good performances all-around, but especially by the freshmen. They really stepped up against the level of competition at such a legendary pool.

Our meet this week is the WAC Shootout in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I am excited because this is the first time we have had a WAC Shootout as well as the first time I have ever been to New Mexico. This is also the first time we have competed against these teams in the beginning of the season. Usually, our first big meet is when we travel down to Nike Cup in Long Beach in November. This will be a great experience, and I can tell people are starting to get nervous and excited to travel, especially the freshmen.

Each one of us has our goals set high for this weekend. We all plan on improving not only our times from last weekend, but our best times ever. With the positive attitudes, high spirit and great training, we are bound to be successful. I can’t wait to swim against most of the same girls that we will see in February at the WAC Championship in San Antonio, Texas. We had great swims and dives at the meet against Stanford last Friday, and I can’t wait to see how our team performs with such great competition this week. Our team this year is great, and I can only imagine how fast we will swim at WAC.

We are also busy over the next couple of weekends, with a meet in Santa Cruz on October 18, and our first home meet on November 1. Hope to see you there!
