Freshman Makes Immediate Impact At Stanford

Stanford-Freshman Darcie Anderson made her first collegiate swimming meet a memorable one, winning a race and finishing second as San Jose State opened the 2010-11 season against Stanford Friday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center.

Anderson won the 200 breaststroke at 2:18.98, breaking her lifetime best by five seconds.  She is just the second swimmer in school history to win an individual race against Stanford, the other being Brie Marhenke.  Anderson also finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.72.

Anderson was also a part of the 200 medley relay team, swimming the breaststroke portion of the relay and recording her lifetime best by over a second.  She also recorded a lifetime best in the 200 freestyle relay.

"I am very pleased with the way Darcie swam today," said Spartan head coach Sage Hopkins.  "Hitting lifetime bests in your first meet of the year is unusual.  She is doing a great job in practice, and I am very happy for her."

Overall, the Spartans fell to the Cardinal, 187-100 in the dual meet.  Heather Denman won the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.75 and third in the 200 butterfly.  Amy Friedhoff placed third in the 1000 freestyle and fourth in the 500 freestyle, while Rudie Guerrero was third in the 100 backstroke and second in the 100 butterfly.  Kiley Foster was third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free.  Julia Craddock won the 200 individual medley.

Diver Jessica Holden competed in the one and three meter events, placing second in the one meter with 212.40 points and fourth in the three meter with 220.05 points.

"I was very pleased with our attitude going into today's meet against Stanford and our performances during the meet," said Hopkins.  "Going against a top-tier program in Stanford could be intimidating, but the ladies did a tremendous job today.   I am very pleased with their times and attitudes throughout the meet.  This was the best opening meet we have had in the six years I have been here."

San Jose State competes next Friday, October 8, at UC Santa Cruz in a meet with the Banana Slugs and Cal State East Bay.
