Erener Swims To Pair Of Medals In Native Turkey

Izmir, Turkey - San Jose State University swimmer Beste Erener raced to a pair of medals at a national event in her native Turkey during the first week of August.

Erener, who began her junior year at San Jose State last week, earned a gold medal with a first-place finish in her specialty, the 400 individual medley, and a silver medal with a second-place effort in the 200 individual medley.

The native of Istanbul, Turkey, turned in a personal-best time as the runner-up in the 200 individual medley, and was narrowly off her best time of 5:09 in the 400.

The meet, staged in long-course meters like most international competitions, as opposed to the short-course yards in United States collegiate swimming, took place August 2-5, in the city of Izmir on the coast of the Aegean Sea in Western Turkey.

The event was put on by the Turkish Swim Federation to mark the 50th anniversary of its establishment.

Erener was swimming for her club team of 12-plus years, Galatasaray SK Istanbul. A total of 535 athletes from 35 clubs from all around Turkey were present for the meet. Competing with 58 athletes of its own in the age groups of 13-14, 15-16 and 17-plus on the women’s side, Galatasaray finished second as a team in both the open-age women’s division, as well as in the overall standings in combination with the men’s side.
