Women's Swimming & Diving Reloads For 2013-14

One of the top divers from the state of Washington and one of Oregon top high school sprint freestyle specialists are the final two incoming freshmen to sign a National Letter-of-Intent with the San Jose State University women’s swimming and diving program. Sage Hopkins, head coach of the current two-time Western Athletic Conference champion Spartans, made the announcement.

Diver Marissa O’Quinn from Peninsula High in Gig Harbor, Wash., and sprint freestyle swimmer Cassidy Robinson from West Linn (Ore.) High plan to enroll at San Jose State beginning in the Fall 2013 semester.

"I am very happy with the addition of Marissa and Cassidy to our incoming freshman class.  Marissa is a very high level athlete who excels in diving, acrobatics, and cheer. We strongly believe that she has tremendous potential in the sport," says the Spartans' head coach.  "Cassidy is someone that comes to us with a solid background in the sport and likewise, has tremendous potential to improve."

O’Quinn is a two-time place winner in 1-meter diving at Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Class 3-A state championships. In 2011, she was eighth and in 2012, fifth. Relatively new to the sport, O’Quinn was a gymnast from age four until her freshman year in high school. A WIAA Scholar-Athlete and team captain of the swimming and diving team, she ranks fourth academically among the students in her senior class according to The Peninsula Gateway.

Robinson is ranked ninth in the state of Oregon’s 2013 senior class by collegeswimming.com. She has best times of 24.25 in the 50 free, 53.61 in the 100 free, 1:59.35 in the 200 free and 59.08 in the 100 back competing for the Dolphins Swim Club in Portland, Ore. At the 2013 Texas-Louisiana Short Course Championships, Robinson qualified for two B and two C finals. She finished 11th in the 100 breast in a time of 1:05.60, 16th in the 50 free with a 24.44, 21st in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.15 and 24th in the 100 back with a 1:00.54.

A member of the Lake Oswego Swim Club Hall of Fame, Robinson was one-fourth of the USA Swimming record-setting 200 yard free relay for girls ages 11-12. In January 2008, she and her relay teammates recorded a 1:40.25 time.
