DeWames Finishes 33rd In 50 Free At NCAA Championship

AUBURN, Ala. – Junior freestyler Marisa DeWames finished 33rd Thursday in the 50 freestyle at the 2012 NCAA Women’s Swimming Championship at Auburn University.
DeWames’ time of 22.62 placed her ahead of 34 other competitors in the race, including swimmers from recent team champions California, Arizona and host Auburn. DeWames was the top Western Athletic Conference finisher, beating Alie Schmidtke of New Mexico State, who finished 61st.
“It was a solid first day,” said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins. “I think (DeWames) got some first race jitters out of the way.”
DeWames will swim again on the championship’s final day Saturday, competing in the 100 freestyle. The event preliminaries begin at noon central time and can be watched streaming live here: http://ulive.cbssports.com/index-ncaa.html?media=303039.
