Freshman women's swimmer Morgan McCormick and sophomore outfielder/designated hitter Brett Bautista are the February Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month, presented by ScholarShare.
McCormick became the first San José State athlete to win an individual Mountain West championship in any sport when she was victorious in the 200 backstroke event at this year's MW swimming and diving championship. Not only did she win, but she did it with a conference and school-record setting time of 1:54.13. The Golden, Colo., native was named the MW Freshman of the Year for her victory, and fourth place result in the 200 individual medley, plus her two NCAA Championship B cut marks. McCormick will become the first freshman in SJSU history to compete in an NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championship when she represents the Spartans March 19-21 at the Greensboro (N.C.) Aquatics Center.
Designated hitter/outfielder Brett Bautista batted .480 (12-for-25) and reached base safely in all eight games during the month of February. He drew seven walks and only struck out three times. The Granite Bay, Calif., native had three multi-hit games, including two three-hit performances. He helped the Spartans take three out of four games from Northern Colorado when he went 7-for-13 with four runs and two RBI.
