20 Questions With Beste Erener & Katey Nelson

For this week’s split, road edition of 20 Questions, we sat down with junior Spartan swimmers Beste Erener and Katey Nelson from the hotel room they currently share in San Antonio, Texas, site of the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championship. The WAC Championship began with a pair of relay events on Wednesday night, February 20.

Erener, an advertising major out of Istanbul, Turkey, and Nelson, a recreation major from Santa Rosa, Calif., will compete in their first races during morning preliminaries on Thursday, February 21. Erener is entered in the 200 individual medley, with Nelson swimming the 500 freestyle. Both are former Academic All-WAC selections and two-time second-team All-WAC honorees in their respective specialties, the 400 individual medley and 200 backstroke, each improving from seventh-place finishes as freshmen in 2006 to sixth-place efforts in 2007, with sights set even higher for this year’s meet.

10 Questions With Beste Erener

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions?
I would normally go out and get some fresh air. I like to do my stretching with the fresh air and with my music on before my race.

What are you currently listening to?
I used to listen to techno or house music before I my races, but it’s changed now. I prefer to listen to slow music now.

What is your favorite place in San Jose?
My favorite place in San Jose is Santana Row, especially during the summer time.

What has been your favorite class so far at San Jose State?
My favorite class is all of my advertising classes, which are my major classes.

What is your favorite thing about your sport?
Being very responsible for my life and also being much more disciplined than anyone else.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
The most influential person in my life is my father.

What do you like to do when you are away from swimming?
I really like to hang out with my friends, I enjoy being with them. But sometimes, I like to be by myself while listening to my music and walk around the city, San Francisco. I like to go shopping; I really enjoy the environment there. I also like to stay home at times and rest, since we get very tired from practices. Sometimes, it feels so good when you do nothing but relax at home.

What would be your dream vacation spot?
My dream vacation spot would be Bora Bora.

What are your individual goals and expectations at the 2008 WAC Championship?
My individual goals are being in the top eight in my three events, the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 butterfly. I would like to get into the top three in the 400 IM.

What are your team goals and expectations at the 2008 WAC Championship?
My team goal is to place in the top three, which would be a first in San Jose State history. I believe in all of my teammates that we can do it! We worked really hard throughout the season; I know we will all swim so fast. GO SPARTANS!!

10 Questions With Katey Nelson

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions?
Not really. I just listen to music to get me ready.

What are you currently listening to?
I like everything, but mostly rap before meets.

What is your favorite place in San Jose?
I like downtown. There is always something to do, like going to the movies or going out to eat.

What has been your favorite class so far at San Jose State?
I liked my event planning class that I took last semester.

What is your favorite thing about your sport?
My favorite thing about swimming is the competition and camaraderie. I am friends with everyone, but once we race in the pool, it’s a whole different story. It is fun to have friendly competition with people from other teams.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
The most influential people in my life are my grandfather, who passed away a year and a half ago, and my parents.

What do you like to do when you are away from swimming?
I like to hang out with friends and do random stuff. My roommates and I are always doing something fun. I also enjoy listening to music.

What would be your dream vacation spot?
My dream vacation spot would be Australia or Jamaica.

What are your individual goals and expectations at the 2008 WAC Championship?
I want to get my best times in all three of my races. I would like to finish in the top eight in two events and get either first or second team All-WAC.

What are your team goals and expectations at the 2008 WAC Championship?
I really want to get third place as a team. I know we can do it. I would love to see everyone get their best times in all their races. I also want to see my whole team enjoying themselves in Texas and I know everyone will swim fast!!!
