Katey Nelson is one of four fourth-year seniors on the 2008-09 San Jose State University women’s swimming and diving roster. The native of Santa Rosa, Calif., swims the middle-distance freestyle events, but excels in the backstroke, the 200 back in particular. She ranks fifth all-time at San Jose State and is a three-time second-team All-Western Athletic Conference performer in the event. Katey is a hospitality, tourism and event management major who is a three-time Academic All-WAC honoree and three-time San Jose State University Scholar-Athlete.
San Jose State concluded the regular season with a 16-1 dual record, posting 16 consecutive victories, and next heads to San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, February 23, for the 2009 WAC Championship, February 25-28.

Senior Katey Nelson
The senior meet was a great day. It was successful, as many friends and family members attended to watch the four seniors swim in our last home meet. It was a beautiful day, our whole team swam pretty solid times, and we got another victory. Competing as a Spartan at The Aquatics Center is always a memorable experience, and I can’t believe Saturday was my last time.
This season has been amazing, and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I am so happy to end with such a great season and record so far. The team chemistry is unbeatable, which only makes us stronger and harder to beat going into our final competition. The WAC Championship will be a great finale for our season and for the seniors.
I know each of our team members will produce lifetime-best times at the meet. Our energy and spirit going into WAC will be very high. Competing in an indoor pool, such as the one in San Antonio, Texas, for our conference meet, is such an advantage. The intensity is 10 times greater indoors. We will also have so much more competition at the meet, with having three heats of finals for each event. Hopefully, every person on our team will get a second swim in at least one of their races.
As for Lauren, Beste and Tarolyn, this is our last time to shine together in the water. I am so proud to graduate with these four girls, as well as to finish my career with this whole team. Our place at WAC is yet to be determined, but I know we all have the heart to swim fast, as we will get the best times of our lives in two weeks. See you in San Antonio, Texas!
